Tumbarumba image

Tumbarumba is located in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains and is surrounded by vineyards, trout streams, cattle and sheep stations. Tumbarumba sprang to life in the 1850s during the gold rush era and the town retains some of its historic buildings such as the Court House. Explorers Hume and Hovell trekked through the area on their way to Port Phillip in 1824, and you can retrace their steps on part of the Hume and Hovell Track that follows Burra Creek, cutting through a tunnel built during the gold-mining days in the 1800s. Learn about the gold mining and pioneer days at the Tumbarumba Museum, conveniently located in the Visitor Information Centre. The museum hosts a permanent display of the Southern Cloud. The aircraft disappeared in the area in 1931 and was not found until 1958. See the stunning Paddys River Falls, located 18 kilometres from town. Visit local cellar door Courabyra Wines for tastings of Tumbarumba's award-winning cool climate wines and see the Artists on Parade Gallery or stop in at Forage Merchant and Occasions or Twisted Willow Homestore. Annual events include the New Year's Day Rodeo, Tumbarumba Cup and Tumbafest - the town's festival of music, food and wine.
