About Us
Guide Dog Services
Through our Guide Dog program, we are Western Australia’s primary provider of Guide Dog services to people who are blind or vision impaired.
Guide Dog is a life-changing gift of freedom and independence. A Guide Dog can give you the confidence to walk out your front door, enrol in university, apply for a job, go out to dinner with friends or take your first holiday in years.
A Guide Dog can provide you with the safety, mobility and independence to lead a more fulfilling life. A Guide Dog can empower you by:
- Helping to overcome obstacles
- Stopping when there’s a change in surface level such as a kerb or set of stairs
- Locating doors, seats, pedestrian buttons at traffic lights
- Locating the destinations that you use regularly.
- Information about the Guide Dog program and how to apply for a Guide Dog is available on the Guide Dogs WA website or the Guide Dogs Tasmania website.
Therapy Dogs
Therapy dogs are trained to provide affection and comfort to children, at-risk-youth, adults and seniors in a wide variety of formal and informal therapeutic settings. Each therapy dog acts as a bridge between the person and the rest of the world. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs reduce stress levels and increase daily successes for children in school and therapeutic contexts.
Adults whose disabilities and life needs would improve by working with a companion dog are also eligible for placement through our program. These include returned service members recovering from traumatic brain injury and living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well as adults living with other disabilities.
