Introducing Iceland Ísland - A Solo Art Exhibition by Joan Peters
Local artist Joan Peters’ exhibition Iceland Ísland showcases work she created during her recent experience at the NES Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, a small fishing town in northwest Iceland where she lived for two months during its summer season.
“Being with like-minded people who validated my work and had an emotional response to my work gave me invaluable encouragement,” said Joan about the Residency.
Her artwork conveys a deep sense of reflection and introspection. The unique landscape (or sometimes even the absence of landscape) may have served as the inspirational backdrop but the search for beauty to be depicted is never on her radar or goal. Instead, she finds that she paints what she can’t find the words for.
Once an inaugural Singapore Girl with Singapore Airlines, Joan Peters migrated to Perth in 1975. For the past 25 years Joan practised as a media and entertainment lawyer. She was awarded the Order of Australia in 2022 for her outstanding contribution to the performing arts. Prior to this Joan was twice nominated for WA Citizen of the Year and twice for contribution to the Industry at the WA Screen Culture Awards. She founded Be Kids Australia Inc., a charitable organisation which has been working with disadvantaged children and youth for the past 17 years.
Joan Peters shares her perspective on her transformative journey: "Sometimes one has to turn one's world the other side down. I arrive at the fishing town of Skagaströnd, far from Perth, Western Australia, and everything I know.”
“I paint from perception with a minimalist colour palette, allowing the present to surface in my work. Time is of no consequence. The Northern Lights do not play in the sky…it plays within me" says Peters.
